VR Game Dev - The importance of color and light

During the development of Goblin Rush, a lot of changes has been made to the lighting and colors of the game. We found that this highly impacts not only the general mood and aesthetic of game, but also the players experience. In the beginning we used an open environment, with a clear vision of the sky - we then chose to change the scenary, since a lot of players felt a great sense of motion sickness caused by a large unconstrained environment - we moved the player indoors surrounded by tangible closed corridors.

Here we experienced serveral new issues when lighting a dimly lit scene, compared to a brightly lit one.

Key points of lighting dark environments;

- Using high contrasting colors will make the light brighter and more realistic, while keeping the scene dark.

- The color of the light should have a big impact on the color of the envionment.

- Use opposites when chosing light and shadow colors - orange light = purple shadows.

- The colors do not look the same on screen as it does experienced in VR.
